BUFFEL SNUFF WITH THE PHOENIX WEEDWACKERS

We team up with the Phoenix Weedwackers on the second Saturday each month to wield pickaxes and remove this invasive species from the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. Buffelgrass, originally introduced for livestock forage and soil erosion control, has spread widely, transforming previously fire resistant desert areas into flammable grasslands. Buffelgrass also crowds out native plant species, especially the saguaro, and negatively impacts the habitats of native wildlife species, especially the mule deer and the desert tortoise. The removed grasses are secured in large plastic garbage bags and disposed of in the landfill so that seeds do not travel to other locations after the plants have been removed.
